Assistive Technology: Creating Inclusive Workplaces

Until recently Assistive technology (AT) would have been described as a specialist piece of equipment, software or system used by disabled people to improve access to technology in the workplace (as well as many other areas of life). AT can help people with different disabilities to speak, type, remember, write, and plan as well as many other things.

But things are changing and the mobile the devices that most of us use come with built in AT ranging from intelligent personal assistants like Siri or Cortana who can respond to your voice commands and book meetings or send a message to apps or built in features that offer text-to-speech and dictation.

For any employer committed to inclusion it's important to be aware of and promote the assistive technology available on most desktops or on the devices we carry on our pockets. This new generation of tech is all designed to make it easier for everyone including people with disabilities, to access information and communications.
